ALUN Rossiter hailed his Swindon Robins record breakers after they clinched the SGB Premiership title in stunning fashion last night.

Swindon produced a scintillating come-from-behind performance to beat Wolverhampton Wolves 90-89 on aggregate and be crowned top-flight champions for just the third time in the club’s history.

The Robins put the disappointment of a four-point deficit from Monday night’s first leg at the Abbey Stadium behind them to claim a 47-42 victory on Wolves’ own shale in the second leg and take the crown by the narrowest of margins.

With Wolves having lost just once at Monmore Green all season, the odds looked against Swindon but just as they have all season, Rossiter’s men defied the doubters.

Having finished the campaign top of the table after a club record of 17 successive victories, Robins boss Rossiter believes no one can argue that his side are worthy champions.

“It’s amazing. I am just so proud,” said Rossiter.

“The guys went in the changing rooms when Monday’s meeting was over and were peeved off. We know we didn’t do the right thing and when I walked in every one of them said it isn’t over and fair play to them, it wasn’t.

“We were up against it, everybody wrote us off. Make no bones about it, nobody gave us a hope.

“It has been an unbelievable season. After 17 wins on the bounce, we deserve it. No arguments, we deserve it.”

The Robins’ success came on the 50th anniversary of the club’s first British title back in 1967 and made it two league championships for Rossiter after he guided Swindon to glory in 2012.

“It is just as good as 2012 because that was the first one for Swindon after 45 years,” said Rossiter.

“That was pretty special but this is 50 years after the first one so to do it this year is great.”
