CHILDREN at St Patrick’s RC Primary School in Corsham were taught not to let their guard down during a unique fencing experience.

Dressed head to toe in protective gear, complete with a plastic or metal foil, every pupil was treated to a session in the school hall by Bath Sword on Friday.

Deputy head Jennie Courtney said: “Our headteacher Rita McLoughlin wants the children to experience as many new opportunities as they possibly can.

“We worked with Bath Sword and every class from Year 1 right through to Year 6 had a fencing lesson.

They tried on all the kit, learnt how to stand and hold the sword and all had a go at the sport.

“For the little ones in Reception, Bath Sword gave them a talk and let them try on some of the masks so everyone was involved.

“All the kids absolutely loved it

“And lots of them said how much they would like to go to Bath and take up beginners’ lessons.”

“We are still on the back of the Olympic 2012 legacy and we think it is important that children can experience some of the lesser known sports that came to the fore at that event.”
