A LIDEN car buyer who received six penalty points after he says a dealer failed to follow through on their promise to insure his new car says the garage has effectively taken away his licence.

Brandon Boustred, 18, picked up his new Ford Focus ST from Swindon’s Allen Ford dealership on Monday 25, and says he was told he would be insured for the first two weeks of ownership.

Just over a week later, on October 3, he was pulled over by police for speeding on Thamesdown Drive, but the penalty was much more severe than he was expecting.

Brandon said: “They pulled me over for speeding, but then it flagged up that I had no insurance.

“When I was sat in the car, they said the car’s registered in my name, but that the insurance is not valid.

“I told him that I should have been insured, and he gave me a production note, so I had to provide evidence within seven days.”

Although the first week’s insurance had been processed, it appeared the second had not. Brandon contacted the salesman who managed the sale of the car, to say that the second week had not been arranged.

The salesman, on holiday, told him to return to the dealership, where one of his colleagues processed seven days of insurance, though it could, by then, only start from October 4.

A member of staff signed the paper to confirm that he should have been insured from October 2.

Brandon said: “I spoke to the police, and they said to take it to court – either way, they’re going to give me the six points, and I’ll have to go to court and hope that the court sees my side of it.

“I have spoken to a barrister, and he told me to go to the Ford garage when the guy is back from holiday on Monday, and ask if they are going to accept liability. If they don’t accept liability, then I am going to have to take it to court, and hope to God that they see my side."

While he accepts he deserves his three points for speeding, as a newly-qualified driver, having passed his test last December, Brandon will be disqualified from driving if he tallies six penalty points.

He said: “Speeding is three points, but you get six points for driving without insurance.”

“If I get those six points, Allen Ford will effectively have taken my licence off me.”

A spokesman for Allen Ford has said that it will not comment on the allegations at this time, but that it will conduct an internal investigation.
