A POPULAR Green Party activist has been recognised for her inspirational qualities and her creative approach to campaigning.

South Swindon candidate Talis Kimberley-Fairbourn was named runner-up in the 'Inspiring Candidate' category at this year’s Green Party conference in Harrogate at the weekend.

Talis, from Wroughton, said: “I was utterly amazed to be nominated, never mind shortlisted.

“There are some incredibly powerful stories coming out tonight, including Sheffield councillor Alison Teal, who's being taken to court by the council she's a member of, following her arrest while trying to save street trees.

"I'm delighted, hugely grateful, and immensely proud of the inspiring company I'm keeping."

Caroline Lucas MP, the Greens' co-leader, read a citation which included Talis's active service on the Wroughton Parish Council, and her work to fight development outside of the village's local plan.

Hannick Homes' highly unpopular proposed Marlborough Road development at the edge of Wroughton was recently allowed on appeal by the Secretary of State despite strong and united local opposition.

Talis's response was to print postcards for residents to send to Sajid Javid, highlighting the hollowness of the department's own mission statement, which says that their job is “to give more power to local people to shape what happens in their area”.

Talis, who has been a songwriter and singer for twenty-five years, was also cited for her “creative approach” to campaigning, including by using her music.

"I've been using songs to communicate what I feel needs saying for much longer than I've been a local politician," she said.

"Speeches are all well and good, but sometimes a song can tell a stronger story."
