ARMY artillery and tank exercises are believed to have been behind the loud 'banging' noises heard last night.

On Tuesday evening, residents from West Swindon to Old Town complained of loud explosion-like noises that continued until around 9.30pm.

Wiltshire Police said they had received several calls to their 101 hotline about the noise.

The 'banging' coincided with a late firing day at Larkill range on the army’s Salisbury Plain training area.

According to the MoD’s October newsletter for the Salisbury Plain training area, late firing is due to continue daily until Sunday, October 22.

Some believed that the noises could have been pile driving by railway workers currently carrying out safety improvements on the Ermin Street railway bridge.

Overnight work is due to take place between October 18 and October 27, when scaffolding will be installed and vegetation cut back.

However, Network Rail confirmed that no piling works took place on Tuesday evening.
