SWINDON and Wiltshire Pride may not go ahead next year unless key roles on the organising committee can be filled.

The shock news comes after a number of committee members decided to step down or take a break following this year’s hugely successful 10th anniversary festival at Town Gardens, Old Town.

But the remaining members are determined to keep the rainbow flag flying, and are seeking new people to help organise the 2018 event.

Current chairman Jo Sharpe is among those stepping down this year.

She said: “The continuation of the event in Swindon is vital to ensure that the LGBTQI community continues to feel integrated, and the event provides the opportunity for the whole community to support equality and diversity.

“Being involved in organising the event in Swindon and Wiltshire has been an honour, and the experience I have gained and people I have met in the past 10 years is something I will never forget along with memories I will treasure forever.

“Anyone joining the future committee will have a very rewarding experience by being involved in such an awesome event”.

The remaining members of the committee are happy to continue in their current roles.

But key positions such as chairman, vice chairman, sponsorship, fundraising, entertainment and grants still need people to come forward.

Without the roles being filled, it is unlikely that there will be an event in 2018.

This was described by Jo as “disappointing for the LGBTQI and wider community”, because Pride has become “one of the biggest free community events in Wiltshire”.

Speaking about what is required from potential new members, Jo said: “Committee roles require a certain level of commitment, dedication and enthusiasm. Some experience of these positions is required, but some of the members stepping down are still prepared to support people within these roles.

“There is also the opportunity for training to be given on some roles.

“The 2017 committee would like to thank all that have been involved in the past. Without your support Pride would not have happen.”
