GREEN-fingered volunteers tackled overhanging trees in a public safety bid.

Armed with chainsaws, secateurs and garden saws, they cut back branches and scrub in a dark corner of Liden Green.

The volunteers, led by ward councillors Barbara and Kevin Parry, hoped that the improvements would ease walkers’ fears that the path running alongside the line of trees was unsafe.

Coun Kevin Parry said: “We’re trying to go above and beyond what the council used to do in this park.

“A lot of people fear walking along this path. We’re trying to make this green a more attractive place for the future and open up the area.

“We walk past here every day and we thought, ‘wouldn’t it be great to do something about it’.”

Councillor Barbara Parry added: “We’ve both grown up in the area. We both feel very passionately about it and we just want to make a difference – make it a better place for our children to grow up in.”

This is the latest action day Kevin and Barbara have organised at Liden Green. Earlier in the year they spent a day clearing rubbish from the popular play spot as part of a volunteer litter pick.

Volunteer David Beeton, 53, has lived in Liden since 1977. “It’s nice to see people coming out and taking a bit of responsibility for keeping the area tidy,” he said. “It’s about doing something good for the community.”

The group were joined by grounds maintenance contractors paid for by Nythe, Eldene and Liden Parish Council.
