A MAN in his 20s had to be rescued from a roadside ditch in Chiseldon on Sunday night after coming off his motorbike.

Emergency services raced to Marlborough Road near The Plough on the Hill pub just after 8.50pm after receiving multiple calls from distressed residents about the crash.

No other vehicle was involved.

Two rapid response vehicles and one ambulance were among the first on the scene and while they were able to treat the patient for a suspected fractured leg, due to his location, they were unable to move him.

Fire crews from Swindon and Stratton, assisted by rope rescue teams from Chippenham and Trowbridge, were called in to assist paramedics and they were able to get him to safety on the roadside.

Due to his injuries, the patient, believed to be 25, was airlifted to Southmead Hospital in Bristol by Wiltshire Air Ambulance.

Wiltshire Police also attended as the road was closed for roughly an hour and a half.

A closure of one from Junction 15 on the M4 to the Plough on the Hill pub was put in place while the fire service helped rescue the man and to allow the air ambulance to land.
