AN EX-copper with a passion for Disney is taking on one of showbiz’s toughest runs.

The four-day challenge will see Haydon End woman Lisa Mundy run almost 50 miles around Disneyworld Florida.

The world-famous theme park is the setting for the “Dopey Challenge”. It involves running a 5k, 10k, half-marathon and full marathon on consecutive days.

For Disney super-fan Lisa it will be the culmination of a lifetime following the brand.

“This ties up my two great loves: Disney and running,” said Lisa, 50. “I watched all the Disney films as a kid.”

The former detective says she has visited the Florida park at least 20 times. “I’ve just always loved going,” she said.

It was only by chance that experienced runner Lisa, who has previously taken on the London marathon after her mum was taken by a brain tumour, applied to run the Disneyworld challenge.

“I wanted to do it, but my husband wasn’t that keen,” she said. “But a couple of months ago an email came through about the run.

“I followed the link. I thought, if it takes me any time to fill in I won’t do it. But I’d already run with them before and so all the fields on the form were filled.

She laughed. “One very unhappy husband later…”

When she takes on the Disney run, she’ll be doing it for Brighter Futures’ radiotherapy fund.

The hospital charity needs to raise £2.9million to kit out a state-of-the art cancer fighting radiotherapy unit – saving poorly patients a 70-mile round trip to Oxford.

Lisa hopes to raise £500 and has already chalked up almost £380 in pledges.

“I’m hoping that if it goes over the target people will keep donating,” said Lisa, who will fly to Disneyworld in January.

She chose Brighter Futures after a close friend, who she met through running group Swindon Shin Splints, lost her battle with cancer last month.

Lisa said: “She was only in her 40s. She was a lovely, vivacious girl.”

Another friend, who runs with Swindon Allstars, has recently seen her cancer return.

Her friends’ experiences left Lisa convinced of the need for a Swindon radiotherapy unit.

“They have the extra hassle of having to travel,” she said. “I can’t believe that Swindon hasn’t got its own radiotherapy centre.”
