Sarah Singleton takes a look at two favourite ballets coming to Swindon

THE passion of Romeo and Juliet and the seasonal magic of The Nutcracker arrive at the Wyvern Theatre next week, when the prestigious Russian State Ballet returns with two stunning productions.

Tragic love story Romeo and Juliet, with music by Prokofiev, features an orchestra of over 30 musicians. Perhaps the best known love story in the world, Shakespeare’s play was one of the first works of literature to inspire ballet choreographers, so perfectly suited to dance are its drama, romance and tragedy.

Set to one of Prokofiev’s most evocative scores, this production is filled with beautiful dances, riveting battles and compelling drama. It tells of two teenagers who fall in love, despite the murderous rivalry between their families, and it has become one of the most beloved ballets, attracting audiences worldwide.

The Nutcracker, with music by Tchaikovsky, is a Christmas favourite for all the family. With a live orchestra, this is a vibrant and breath-taking production and a feast for the eyes.

Directed and choreographed by former Bolshoi ballet soloist Konstantin Uralsky, the Christmas story is based in a tale by ETA Hoffman. It tells of Marie, a melancholy little girl whose godfather Drosselmeyer gives her a nutcracker doll as a present on Christmas Eve. But the nutcracker turns into a prince and the magic begins.

A visual spectacle, the ballet includes snow flurries, sweets, princes and romance – as well as plenty of familiar music, like the Waltz of the Flowers and the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. These elements combine to make the Nutcracker a brilliant introduction to ballet for beginners, as well as a familiar treat for dance aficionados.

The Russian State Ballet and Opera House was created to present the highest quality and opera and ballet. Over the past 15 years the organisation has worked with numerous companies and artists from Russia, selecting the best to perform around the world.
