A TOWN centre hotel was evacuated after a toilet fire.

999 crews were called to Thistle Express on Islington Street shortly after 8.50am this morning.

Firefighters from Westlea, Drove Road and Stratton fire stations spent over an hour at the scene, tackling what Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said was a “small fire” in a first floor toilet.

They used specialist imaging kit to check that the fire had not spread.

Thistle Express was evacuated while fire crews extinguished the fire.

The exact cause of the fire is not known, but firefighters at the hotel suggested it could have been the result of a dropped cigarette.

The last crew left Islington Street at around 10.15am.

A spokeswoman for Thistle Express said: "We can confirm that there was an evacuation of the hotel in response to a quickly contained fire on site. The health and safety of our guests is a priority and we strictly adhere to fire safety regulations. Our team liaised with the local fire services and all guests were promptly evacuated whilst the situation was dealt with."
