STEPPING into the world of Ancient Greece or walking through the Second World War could soon be a part of lessons at Chiseldon Primary after pupils launched a fundraiser to buy virtual reality headsets to improve their learning.

The school will have to raise faces a mammoth task of raising almost £1,500 in less than two weeks towards the project, which hopes to buy around seven new headsets so that all pupils can benefit from a shift towards a more immersive curriculum.

A virtual reality headset tricks your brain into believing you are in a 3D world by using a phone as goggles with an app creating an illusion that you are in different world – irrespective of location or time.

Currently the school has two headsets, which have to be split among the 236 pupils in lessons.

But with funds slowly starting to pour in for their fundraiser, teacher Emily Weston hopes the school can get to the target within the deadline of two weeks.

“We wanted to come up with an idea of having these immersive headsets to help the students have a different experience of history so they can learn about it better,” she said.

“For example, Year 6 are learning about World War One and these headsets are just one way to further extend that knowledge and give them another experience of learning and understanding the topic.

“We have bought lightweight ones, so they can be used by children of all ages from nursery to Year 6.

“We hope the headsets will help to engage and inspire children with history and it means it will be more accessible to all learners.

“Children are quite understanding of technology as well.

“We do a lot of writing around history and last week my class did some artwork about the Second World War. These headsets will give them another way to experience the subject and that will transpire into their writing as well.

“The impact should affect their work right across the curriculum.”

Pupils in the school parliament came up with the project idea having previously worked round the clock to raise funds to improve their outdoor assembly area, wildlife area and vegetable patches as well as new sports equipment.

Emily added: “We’re starting off with them helping history lessons but the headsets can be used in all subjects from sports to geography where they could look at landscapes and so we hope they can really be used across the whole school.”
