AN OLD Town street will be transformed into amazing, giant Advent calendar this month.

Every day over December, residents in St Margaret’s Road will open their curtains to reveal a new Christmas scene.

Last year, colourful front windows opened on to snowy cityscapes, Jesus in the manger and even a card model of a boy and his snowman.

“It’s now in its third or fourth year,” said one of the organisers, the Rev Daphne Hardwick.

The scheme grew out of the Old Town street’s festive celebrations.

Daphne, an associate minister at Christ Church, in Cricklade Street, said: “A few days before Christmas we usually try to get a tree and put it down by the end of the road.

“The children go and decorate it.

“It’s all about building community spirit.”

In past years windows have been themed around carols – while last Christmas it was more relaxed. Daphne said: “We were running out of ideas.”

However, this Christmas there will be no shortage of ideas. Organisers have plumped for a Christmas films theme.

With dozens to choose from – including three Home Alone flicks – residents along the historic street should have no problem coming up with plans.

This year, Sarah will be the first to open up the curtains to her front room – revealing a Grinch-inspired scene.

The fairy-light filled window comes complete with a green “Grinch” hand.

The teacher, who has lived in St Margaret’s Road for 14 years, said: “I absolutely love Christmas.

“I love all the things we do down the street. We’ve got such a great community here.”

Daphne’s children grew up in St Margaret’s Road and she has happy memories of dozens of Christmases and New Years celebrated along the street.

She said: “We have a lot of street parties here.

“We try and make it a social place. I’m very keen on creating community spirit.”

The Adver hopes to feature every house along St Margaret’s Road as a new Advent scene is revealed each day.
