ROCKERS will take to the stage in aid of Brighter Futures.

Five-piece band “At-It” have come together for the charity concert at Commonweal School.

United by a shared history, most of the band have worked at the Old Town secondary.

Their also united by a keen wish to get Swindon’s radiotherapy centre built.

“Brighter Futures is a cause close to all our hearts,” said At-It’s rhythm guitarist Paul Absalom.

“One of our friends and colleagues who worked at the school passed away with breast cancer.

“Her pet hate was having to travel to Oxford for treatment.”

Paul, 55, a former arts and design technology technician at Commonweal, hopes that the charity benefit will help Brighter Futures reach its £2.9million radiotherapy appeal target.

The hospital charity needs to raise the money in order to kit out a state-of-the-art radiotherapy unit at Swindon’s Great Western Hospital – saving poorly cancer patients the 70-mile round trip to Oxford.

Paul said of his former friend, teacher Sharon Blackmore: “She was a wonderful lady. She gave me confidence – it was a pleasure to work with her.”

Thanking At-It for their support, Brighter Futures chief Cat Newman said: “The local Swindon community are backing our radiotherapy appeal in their thousands and in such extraordinary ways, like the one off performance by At It.

“The guys are reforming the band that never were, to perform the album they never released, featuring classic tracks you've never heard.”

At-It will perform alongside other Old Town performers, while a licensed bar will keep the crowd in good spirits.

The concert, You’re never too old to Rock and Roll, is on Saturday, December 2, from 7pm in the Commonweal School C6 auditorium. Tickets are £5 and available on the door.
