RESIDENTS will get a say on how to spend thousands on an East Swindon community space.

The £100,000 cash grant, which comes from the borough council, will help fund modifications to the area around the Liden Library.

It was thought that the funding may have been needed to help move the library from borough council control to a volunteer trust.

But, with the library’s future secure, councillors now want to hear people’s ideas on how the cash could be spent to help improve the area.

Kevin Parry, ward councillor for Covingham and Dorcan, said: “Now we know the library is secure, we can get on with the original job at hand.”

Among the proposals that residents could see realised were things like remodelling steps in the village centre to improve access for more elderly shoppers. The ideas will be worked up by a landscape architect.

Coun Parry said: “There are lots of different options on the table. But it’s what residents want to see there. We’re going to be guided by what they want.”

A consultation event will be at Liden Library on December 14, 6.30pm – 8pm.
