An extremely prolific shoplifter with 98 previous convictions for theft has been jailed for nine months.

Christopher Simpkins, 38, of no fixed abode, appeared at Swindon Magistrates Court on Tuesday and pleaded guilty to five counts of theft from a shop.

On five separate incidents between November 19 and December 2, Simpkins stole from Co-op stores in Hyde Road, Cricklade Road and Beechcroft Road.

On each occasion, Simpkins took alcohol, meat or cleaning products worth a total of several hundred pounds.

On one occasion, staff attempted to stop Simpkins but he made off on his bike

Sergeant Nigel Kinderman said: "Simpkins is a prolific offender whose actions have caused misery for the staff at the Co-op stores.

"We are currently supporting those who have been left feeling intimidated by Simpkins.

“On December 4, officers witnessed Simpkins entering the store and selecting a number of items of meat from the shelf.

"When he saw officers, he threw the items to the floor.

"He was found to have just 10p in his possession at the time and was arrested on suspicion of shoplifting.

“He shows no remorse for his actions and has failed to cooperate with police in custody and during the interviewing process.

“He has a total of 98 previous convictions for theft or similar offences committed over 20 years. I therefore welcome the custodial sentence he has been given.”

Simpkins was also banned from entering any Co-op stores for 12 months.
