A DRIVER escaped uninjured from a horror bus crash that brought 999 crews to Fleming Way.

The Thamesdown 1A service smashed into a town centre bus shelter at around 6.15pm on Wednesday evening.

According to one bystander, the brakes on the bus appeared to have failed as it pulled into the Fleming Way stop.

Bus firm Thamesdown said that the driver and his passengers walked away without injuries.

Police, firefighters, the electricity board and engineers from Thamesdown attended the scene.

Jamie Brewer, 25, from Wichelstowe, witnessed the crash. He said: “It was scary. It looked like there were no brakes on the bus. It’s a good job nobody’s been killed.”

Steven Gardner, 30, from Penhill, said as he watched Thamesdown engineers assess the damaged bus: “It’s quite scary.”

Speculating on the cause of the crash, one woman, 30, who asked not to be named, suggested of the driver: "He must have felt light headed." Her friend added: “Someone could have been killed.”

Alex Chutter, Thamesdown general manager, said: “I can confirm one of our buses was involved in a collision this evening. There are no reported injuries.

“The safety of our passengers, drivers and other road users is a top priority, and we are carrying out an immediate investigation into the circumstances behind this incident.”

Firefighters from Drove Road fire station were called to the crash shortly after 7.50pm. They left at 8.30pm.

The 1A bus service runs between Middleleaze and the Great Western Hospital.
