YOUNGSTER Ellis Iandolo says he is slowly getting to grips with his new role in David Flitcroft’s Swindon Town squad.

Iandolo, who scored his first Football League goal in the club’s 2-1 win over Barnet on New Year’s Day, originally arrived as a forward-thinking midfielder when he made the switch from Maidstone United in 2015.

Under former head coach Luke Williams, Iandolo featured sporadically in Town’s first XI, notching a total of 15 appearances across all competitions.

This season, the 20-year-old has featured more prominently, initially as a midfielder, then left -back and more recently as a wing-back following Flitcroft’s shuffle in formation.

The alteration appears to have had an impact according to Iandolo as Town chalked successive wins against Notts County, Barnet and Forest Green Rovers.

“I had a chance at left-back a couple of times when we were playing a 4-3-3 and we have changed to a 3-5-2 now and at wing-back it allows me to go forward a little bit more,” he said.

“It is a bit more demanding physically to get up and down the pitch but with me and Kyle there, we are a bit younger.

“Although we are not as experienced as the other too, I feel we are athletic and we can get up and down the pitch well. We are playing well in the formation we are in at the moment.”

Iandolo’s ability to play in numerous positions seems to be serving him well so far, as he is just one appearance away from matching last season’s total.

The versatile youngster says his recent stint at left-back came as a surprise to him, but insists he is happy to play anywhere in order to get onto the pitch.

“It wasn’t really a role I could see back in August but the manager likes me there. To be fair to him, when I have been there I have really enjoyed it and just being out on the pitch in the last few games has been brilliant for me,” added Iandolo.

“I thought it would be in a more central role but I have got to do anything for the team. If that means playing at left wing-back, that’s what I will do. I am enjoying it there so it is a position I can see myself in in the future.”
