ROYALTY will visit Swindon's oldest brewery this month.

Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, will tour Arkell's Stratton brewery - as the historic firm celebrates its 175th anniversary.

The wife of Prince Charles is expected to get a taste of a brand new beer - brewed especially for the royal visit.

Called “The Duchess”, head brewer Alex Arkell says it’s strong, dark and hoppy – with “chocolate, lemon and citrus notes”.

The beer was brewed using a historic barley variety grown at the Duchess of Cornwall’s Home Farm at Highgrove.

James Arkell, chairman of the Stratton-based brewery, said: "We are honoured to be welcoming the Duchess of Cornwall to our family brewery. It is a marvellous way to mark the start of our 175th anniversary year."

"Arkell's pubs sit at the heart of our local communities and they are at the heart of everything we do."

This is not the first royal visit for Arkell's.

In 2008, the Duke of Kent dropped in to the brewery.

And when brewers installed two new fermenters in 2011, they named them after the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

The Duchess of Cornwall herself visited Swindon in 2016, meeting the Arkell family at the Great Western Hotel, opposite the railway station.

Camilla will return to Swindon on January 30. A limited run of the beer brewed in her honour will be sold at the Arkell's brewery visitor shop from February 1.
