Police arrested a 16-year-old male on suspicion of burglary today, after he was caught riding a stolen mobility scooter in Freshbrook in the early hours.

Police were called to the Wakefield Close area at around 2.30am, to a report that two males had been seen acting suspiciously and looking over fences. They were then spotted on two mobility scooters in the area.

The information was passed to officers in the area who swiftly located the two males in Rowton Heath Way.

They both made off on foot, but one of the males was located and detained by officers. He was arrested on suspicion of burglary and, when taken into custody, was searched and found to be in possession of a knife and a number of tools.

He was then further arrested on suspicion of being in possession of a bladed article in a public place, and going equipped.

South Community Policing Team Sergeant Neil Bott said: “This theft would have no doubt had a really big impact on the victim, who is aged in his 60s and a double amputee, and therefore relies on his scooters to get out and about.

“This mindless theft would have been really upsetting, so I am pleased that we were able to swiftly locate the scooters and return them to the owner.

“We currently have one male in custody in relation to the incident, and enquiries are ongoing to locate the second person involved.”

Anyone with information is urged to call police on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
