FIREFIGHTERS scrambled to a Rodbourne rooftop after high winds dislodged a piece of lead flashing.

Two crews from Drove Road fire station arrived at the home on Rodbourne Road, north of Bruce Street Bridges, shortly after 1.25pm. 

Using the station's aerial appliance, firefighters removed the lead flashing and loose roof tiles, making the roof safe. 

The crews left at around 3.10pm.

Gareth Evans, Swindon Fire Station manager, said: "We assessed that it was a danger to the public and removed the lead flashing."

The substatial piece of material - used to prevent water leaking into the of the roof - was estimated by firefighters to be 2.5 metres by 1 metre in size.

Police shut off the sliproad to Cheney Manor Road from Bruce Street Bridges until 3.10pm.

Residents were surprised to see the firefighters at work. 

One man, 30, who lives on adjacent Iffley Road, said: "It's not something you expect to see outside your living room window."
