Switzerland international Admir Mehmedi has joined Wolfsburg from Bundesliga rivals Bayer Leverkusen for an undisclosed fee.

The attacking midfielder, who has 58 caps for his country, has signed a four-and-a-half year contract at the Volkswagen Arena after passing a medical on Wednesday morning.

Sporting director Olaf Rebbe told the club’s official website: “Admir Mehmedi fits the bill of our player requirements perfectly. He can be implemented in a variety of attacking roles, he knows the Bundesliga and he can immediately help us.

“He is a real win for the team, as he has proven his quality over many years, both nationally as well as internationally.”

Mehmedi becomes the second signing of the January transfer window following the arrival of Renato Steffen from Basel, while winger Josip Brekalo was recalled early from his loan at Stuttgart earlier this month.

The 26-year-old came through the youth system at Swiss club FC Zurich before joining Ukrainian side Dynamo Kiev in 2012.

Mehmedi first arrived in Germany with Freiburg after just one season in Kiev, initially on loan, and made 60 league appearances for the club where his impressive displays earned him a move to Bayer Leverkusen in 2015.
