SEVERAL Swindon indoor bowlers and teams remain involved in national championship events and competitions.

Mike Titcombe, who reached the semi-finals at the end of January in the national junior men’s U25 singles championships at City of Ely, has reached the Area 14 final in the men’s national singles.

The Westlecot player is just one match away from a place in the national last 16 in the singles at the main block of national championships due to be staged at Melton & District (Leics) from March 23-31, after a 21-5 area singles semi win over Martin Shepherd (Chipping Norton).

Titcombe will meet Robert Newman in the Area 14 singles final, who beat fellow Whiteknights player Simon Jones 21-10 in the area semi.

Chris Cheesley and Neil Smith are through to the area 14 pairs final after a 24-13 win over Dave Snell and Mel Biggs in the semi-finals. They will face Newman and his Reading partner in the area final at Loddon Vale (Basingstoke) which has to be arranged.

Neil Smith and his Westlecot colleagues Biggs and Ian Jefferies (skip) have reached the Area 14 triples final, also at Basingstoke, against a trio from West Berks (Newbury) led by Barry Williams.

Jefferies threesome came from 7-1 down to restore parity eventually at 8-8 against fellow Westlecot players Graham and Craig Hatherall (skip) and Tom Pitttuck before sealing a 19-8 semi-final win with late big counts of four and six.

The foursome of Denis Holborow, Dave Snell, Terry Walton and Mel Biggs are into the semi-finals of the Over 60s fours competition and will play a four from Slade, Buckingham led by Andy Hunt on Tuesday, Feb 20 at 10am at home at Westlecot.

Semi-final two will feature two rinks from West Berks (Newbury) led by Barry Williams and Derek Parsonson.

In ladies Area 14 national championships Katy Smith has reached three finals, two of them with sister Lucy in pairs and triples, where they are joined by Jayne Croston.

The Smith girls thumped Morgan Merryweather and her Whiteknights partner 20-7 in the pairs semi-finals and will face Helen Jones and her Desborough (Maidenhead) partner in the area pairs final at Loddon Vale.

The duo, plus Croston, also reached the triples final after a 20-12 victory over fellow Westlecot indoor players Ginny Nash, Wendy Anderson and Janet Willis.

They also have to play in the triples final at Loddon versus a trio led by Caroline Mabley from Whiteknights.

To complete her trio of area 14 finals Katy is through also to the two bowl singles event after a 21-6 win over Croston.

In the final she will face either Donna Knight (West Berks, Newbury) or Cathy Edwards (Whiteknights).

Finally in the ladies Over 60s pairs competition Anderson and Willis are yet to play Eileen Devonald-Batt (Desborough) and her partner in the area 14 semi-final.
