STAFF at Swindon College’s Little Stars nursery face losing their jobs in a college bid to save funds.

The Swindon Advertiser understands that nursery staff were called in to see HR managers this month and told that the college had launched a 30 day consultation over the future of the nursery.

A source close to the discussions said: “We have 30 days to save our nursery.”

If approved, the nursery could close in June, the Adver has been told. This has not been confirmed by college chiefs.

Swindon College say that no decision has yet been made over the future of the nursery, which they say makes a financial loss.

Lorraine Groch, vice-principal of external relations, said that the college was focussed on reducing its costs and improving efficiency. Like colleges across the country, they were facing “funding pressures” – although remained in good financial health, she said.

“However, the nursery has been making a loss even before we factor in premises and other associated costs,” Ms Groch added. “It also requires new accommodation and has no reserves to fund this.

“We have opened a consultation on the future of the nursery because we can’t foresee a scenario where we can generate sufficient income to fund the new accommodation required.

“At this stage, we are consulting on a proposal and no decisions will be made until the consultation process has been completed.”
