ALZHEIMER’S Support has joined Wiltshire Wildlife Trust to start a new farm activity group for younger and more active people living with dementia.

The charities have won funding for a pilot project that will meet for a day every two weeks at the Blakehill Farm nature reserve, making the most of the outdoors.

Among the ideas for activities put forward are farm walks, helping with livestock, craft courses and growing fruit and vegetables.

The Alzheimer’s charity wants active and younger people living with the condition to get involved.

Chief executive Babs Harris said: “We are so pleased to have this opportunity to bring people together in such beautiful rural surroundings. We are keen to talk to people living with dementia who may wish to come along and who can help us shape the group and perhaps make a start on planning activities.

“The site is absolutely beautiful, with wide skies, wonderful rural views and plenty of space to just relax, enjoy a different pace of life and be close to nature.”

She added: “We already run a very successful wildlife club at Lower Moor Farm with the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust and this is an opportunity to build on that and offer a full day’s experience to people who enjoy the great outdoors.”

Alzheimer’s Support, based in Trowbridge, offers day care, memory cafes, signing groups and carer training for dementia patients and their families.

It also campaigns on their behalf and helps businesses and organisations to become dementia aware.
