Fashion retailer New Look has announced plans to close 60 of its stores to avoid going into administration.

It is believed that 980 staff of the store's 15,300-strong workforce across the UK could face redundancy under the proposals drwn up to save the company.

The plan has been drawn up as part of a rescue plan which is awaitng approval from creditors.

New Look told the BBC it faced "a difficult trading environment".

Chairman Alistair McGeorge said the cuts were "tough but necessary".

The retailer - which has 593 stores across the country - hopes to redeploy employees within the business where possible, it said.

Under the proposal, both of Swindon's stores, at the Orbital Shopping Park and the town centre branch on Regent Street, have escaped the cull.

Deloitte is handling the firm's Company Voluntary Agreement.

Partner Daniel Butters said: ""New Look is an iconic brand on the High Street and the Company Voluntary Agreement will provide a stable platform upon which management's turnaround plan can be delivered.

"It is important to stress that no stores will close on day one, and employees, suppliers and business rates will continue to be paid on time and in full."
