MUM’S the word in Swindon this Sunday with no shortage of places to make her feel special.

Families in the borough are predicted to lavish £7.2million on gifts, meals and days for Mother’s Day

Sparkling afternoon teas with scones, themed cakes and organic Tiamo prosecco – the name means ‘I love you’ in Italian – will mark a sold-out afternoon at four-star Blunsdon House Hotel.

Fabio restaurant in Bath Road, Old Town, will serve some ‘amore’ with an Italian touch.

Sunday roasts are combined with its more familiar dishes such as baked penne pasta with aubergines, tomato and béchamel sauces and melted mozzarella.

Cricklade and Blunsdon Railway is also pulling out the stops, offering a Mother’s Day Service.

Mums with paying children go free on journeys through the picturesque Wiltshire countryside.

The service starts at 10:30am with the first train heading towards Taw Valley Halt, located adjacent to Moulden Hill Country Park. Refreshments are available from the licensed Whistlestop Café in Blunsdon. The day has started early for Eggelicious, which has put two special dishes on the menu at its toasted wrap stops in Old Town and at The Crossing in The Brunel Centre.

The meat option comprises chicken in saffron, orange and tarragon spices and was inspired by the memory of owner Ash Mistry’s mum, Diwali.

Ash said: “I was thinking about Mother’s Day flowers and I came up with the idea of saffron because it comes from crocuses and is used widely over Europe and the Middle East. I have been influenced by mum from an early age and that was how I got a taste for such different flavours. One example was egg coriander on roti, which was her beans on toast. She chopped a few onions and caramelised them, put garlic, ginger and chilli in and then just added two eggs. I still do a version of it today and the customers love it.” Eggelicious, an independent, family-run business that began in the former Tented Market before moving to Wood Street and the town centre, got its name from Ash’s mum and her cooking. He has also created a vegan Mother’s Day option, the ‘poppadom crunch’, which fuses spinach, potato and a crushed poppadom, based on the theme of his home meals.

While Eggelicious will not open on the Sunday, the wraps are available today.

The end of the week should mark a rosy sales patch for Swindon, with residents predicted to spend £7.2million on gifts, meals and outings.

Shoppers will spend £594,000 on greetings cards and £888,000 on pamper products alone, according to a survey by British Land, co-owner of the Orbital Shopping Park on Thamesdown Drive.

Jamie Turner, centre manager at Orbital, said: “Mother’s Day is one of the busiest times of year for us, with shoppers keen to show their mums some much-deserved appreciation. Our research shows just how important this is as lots of mums admit to having less than an hour for themselves each day. Traditional Mother’s Day gifts will always be popular, but this year we’ve also seen more people choosing treats such as breakfast in bed, books and pamper products.”
