THE air ambulance has taken a person to hospital after a suspected explosion in Eldene.

A spokesman for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said that crews had been called to reports of an explosion on Ecklington in Eldene at 3.39pm.

Crews from Stratton and Swindon were mobilised.

The spokesman said: "A small fire was also out upon their arrival and they handed one casualty over the South Western Ambulance Service (SWAS) who was suffering from burns and were conveyed to hospital via Air Ambulance.

"We also sought guidance from a Building Control Officer from Swindon Borough Council and an engineer from the gas board.

"Our Red Cross fire victim support unit also provided assistance at the scene."

Engineers from Wales & West Utilities are also on the scene assisting with the investigation.

A spokesperson for the company said: "We’re aware of reports of an explosion at a property in the Ecklington area of Swindon.

"Our engineers are working with the emergency services to investigate the cause.”

Neighbour Sharon Baker said: "I didn't hear a bang or anything, I was sat on my sofa when I saw blue lights go past my window around 4pm.

"There was a lot of white smoke in the conservatory and one of the roof panels had smashed.

"It's quite frightening.

"Also, they're looking for the dog - it bolted after the explosion. It's been seen around Covingham, Toys R Us and the back of Sainsbury's."
