Sarah Singleton looks at what's happening this weekend in Swindon

All wit and politics

Television regular and Radio 4 favourite Hardeep Singh Kohli brings his new show to Swindon Art Centre on Sunday night.

He has appeared on Question Time, This Week and Daily Politics, and tonight’s show Alternative, Fact received critical acclaim and played to packed audiences at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Hardeep will offer his unique take on the current political climate, combined with his trademark wit.

The comedian rose to fame for his series of comedy and cookery programmes, including Indian Takeaway, Chat Masala, Celebrity Masterchef and Nearly Naked Chef.

He says he learnt to cook from his mother and grandmother.

Later he took part in a documentary called Famous, Rich and Homeless - where he actually lived on the streets.

He also explored his own Indian roots when he presented a documentary for BBC Radio 4 called Crossing The Border - which was about India’s independence.

Hardeep is also a passionate supporter of the Scottish National Party and appeared in rallies for Scottish independence in the 2014 campaign.

But he has been interested in politics since childhood and has abiding fascination with current affairs - which led to him being a firm favourite for television news programmes such as Question Time and The Wright Stuff.

Tickets for Alternative, Fact, which kicks off at 7.30pm, are £16.50, with concessions £2 off. To book, visit swindontheatres.co.uk or call 01793 524481.

All aboard the Orient Express for Lazy Sunday

Enjoy a chilled Sunday afternoon of live acoustic folk and roots music hosted by the band Mr Love and Justice at the Savernake Street Community Hall in Swindon.

Guest performers include Wiltshire band The Orient Express, an ensemble playing a mixture of Turkish traditional folk as well as modern day songs, many of which lead vocalist Sevilay Ataseven Turlington learnt while growing up in Turkey. Turkish music has many flavours and moods, and each region has its own distinct character. The band’s music includes songs from the Balkan borders and the Black Sea area of Turkey, as well as the occasional Arabic song.

Swindon-based acoustic singer-songwriter Eddie Cooke makes his first appearance at Lazy Sunday Afternoon with a collection of his original compositions to share.

Host band Mr Love and Justice is a collective fronted by singer-songwriter Steve Cox, blending late 60s West Coast sounds with contemporary English folk stylings.

The event runs from 3pm to 5pm and tickets are £5 in advance or £6 on the door.
