BIRDSONG, the powerful stage production of Sebastian Faulks’ novel, continues its run at the Wyvern Theatre in Swindon till Saturday.

The complex and affecting drama explores love, war, family and memory in the context of World War I.

A story of forbidden love lies at the heart of the story, as British officer Stephen Wraysford embarks on a passionate affair with a beautiful married woman. Later, caught in the horrors of trench warfare, he remembers the days of their relationship and seeks to find her again.

But this is more than a love story, as Birdsong explores the lives and hopes of a group of sappers - the engineers recruited to dig complex, dangerous tunnels beneath the battleground. Jack Firebrace, in particular, demonstrates his courage and comradeship in a desperate situation but he is yearning to find a way to see his sick son back home in England.

The play was adapted by Rachel Wagstaff. Tim Treloar, whose television credits include Lewis, Foyle’s War and Silent Witness, plays Jack, while Tom Kay takes the role of Stephen Wraysford and Madeleine Knight is Isabelle Azaire.

With an elaborate set, a talented cast and skilful use of light, sound, music and song this is an enthralling performance.

The show begins at 7.30pm till Saturday, with matinee performances today and Saturday at 2pm.
