Sabrina’s Mile will return for its third annual walk today to raise awareness of diabetes.

The walk will be staged between 10am and 3pm at Coate Water, and all are welcome to attend. The charity was set up by the mother of Sabrina Moccia who died aged 33 due to complications from diabetes.

Last month the charity donated £2000 to Great Western Hospital to pay for additional training for nurses as well as the hospital’s Swift course, an educational session to help people with Type 1 diabetes manage their carbohydrate intake and to administer insulin.

Organiser Sandy Johnson explained the need for the extra services the charity helps to fund. “It’s a very complicated science, juggling the medication and understanding how the carbohydrates work in the body. Sometimes you get your diagnosis from the GP and your walk away your left with no explanation of what to do next.

“The walk is very casual, people can bring their dog, bring their children, people can run if they want to or walk if they prefer. It’s nice that people can see it’s invested in the local area. And we can see the benefits to local people."

A number of individuals will be taking part in the walk remotely, with some participants completing their miles in Scotland and Australia.

Donations can be mad at the Sabrina’s Mile GoFundMe page.
