THE end of the financial year may be approaching but firms in Swindon are still recruiting more staff, says Swindon Job Centre.

Vacancies in sectors like hospitality and logistics are also being joined by seasonal jobs.

“We are still seeing some strong economic performance,” said job centre work coach manager Julie Marshall this week.

The town was to host one of 12 new fibre-broadband engineering training depots for BT Openreach and had recently taken part in Nation al Apprentice Week. “That’s gone really, really well,” she said.

The hospitality sector was still offering opportunities. The Village Hotel, which used to be the De Vere, had vacancies and a short term training programme was being with work experience and a guaranteed job interview for a permanent paid position.

Several instructor roles had come in for the new season at Lydiard Jungle Park and PGL’s adventure centre at Liddington was also on the hunt for staff in catering.

Sodhexo had spaces for new staff at Honda ad there were a number of roles at McDonalds, many of them during school hours.

Car Shop, Swindon Borough Councils and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council were all advertising in the centre for customer service roles.

The care sector was also recruiting, including the Orders of St John Care Trust and Lifeways Community Care.

In the logistic world there were a number of firms looking for counterbalance forklift drivers and Pertemps would be running group training sessions while Driver Hire was also looking for candidates.

“It is still very positive, which is great when you think we are running down towards the end of the business year,” she said. “The signs are really still there that companies are looking at recruiting.”

The latest employment figures for Swindon show a total claimant count of 3,170, down 2431 since 2010. The number of 18 to 24-year-olds out of work is 635, down 825 from 2010. Nationally the unemployment rate was 4.3 per cent, the lowest since 1975 and the Office for National Statistics figures showed 402,000 more people had moved into work. Changes to income tax rates in April will also mean people can earn £11,850 before they start paying income tax and the National Living Wage for over 25s will rise to £7.83 an hour.
