A CONSULTANT surgeon, a judge and a radio presenter from Swindon are among four new lieutenants who have been appointed to help represent the Queen in Wiltshire.

Ear, nose and throat specialist Deepak Gupta, who started the Swindon Indian Association to celebrate Indian Culture and help community causes, works at the Great Western Hospital

District judge Simon Cooper sits in the magistrates and family courts in Swindon and Shirley Ludford, who is trainer and station manager at Swindon 105.5.

They, along with Victoria Nye, the founder of financial charity Pfeg, which promotes financial education in schools, were chosen by Lord Lieutenant Sarah Troughton.

They join a list that includes David Hemplemann-Adams, General Sir Mike Jackson, Patrick Wintour and James Arkell.

Mrs Troughton said: “I am delighted to appoint these four new deputy lieutenants. Their expertise and knowledge will greatly enhance the work of the lieutenancy in the county.”

The Lord Lieutenant represents the Crown in the county, taking part in civic events, arranging visits by the royal family and presenting honours and medals on behalf of the Queen.

She is also Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Justices of the Peace, which leads the local magistrates.
