SUPERB scarecrows are cropping up all over Highworth for this year's Scarecrow Trail.

This year's theme is TV shows from the 21st century and a £50 cash prize will be given to whoever correctly identifies the most of the 50 famous faces who have gone from screen to straw.

It's the tenth anniversary of the trail, which began back in 2009 after a leader of the local scouts came up with a novel way to raise money for the group.

Over the years, more than £5,000 for the Highworth Scouts, Beavers and Cubs from sales of the scoresheets, which cost £2 each.

So far, more than 300 sheets have been printed for this year's event, which began on Good Friday and will last all the way through the Easter break until April 15.

Miriam Weisinger and Jane Dobson have organised the trail for four years.

Miriam said: "It's a real community event, we see lots of friends and families going around, even in the rain, and everyone really enjoys it.

"The quality is really good this year, it's really nice to see so many proper scarecrows and not so many cryptic ones that are just pictures.

"We've been planning this since before Christmas and put a reminder in the Highworth Link reminding people about it.

"There have been new makers and old makers - I made three scarecrows myself, including Nora Batty from Last of the Summer Wine, I really enjoy it.

"The scarecrows have to be out from 10am to 7pm every day, whatever the weather.

"Local business have really supported us, we have a lot more prizes this year."

Andrew's Quality Meats, Bloomfields Delicatessen, the Highworth Emporium, the Highworth Hotel, Rafu's, TT Linet, The Old Bakery, the Recreation Center, and the Goldfinger, Saracen's Head and King and Queen pubs offered prizes for runners-up and for the creator of the scarecrow voted the town's favourite.
