A NEW memorial garden has been agreed for Haydon Wick by parish councillors, in time for the one hundredth anniversary of Armistice Day.

A six-foot Tommy figure silhouette, a memorial bench and a proposed rose flower bed will be rearranged to create a contemplative memorial garden for the community.

The new area will be located outside of the parish office on Thames Avenue, opposite a squirrel statue already there.

Chairman of the council, Linda Brown said: “Like most parishes we don’t have a war memorial in Haydon Wick, the nearest one to us is the cenotaph in the centre of town.

“I think it’s important that we have a recognisable symbol in Haydon Wick. We have quite a few ex-servicemen in the parish as well as on our parish council.

“The one hundredth anniversary is the whole driving force behind our decision, to create somewhere for the community and future generations to come and reflect on something we should not forget.”

Parish councillors will discuss proposals for a second memorial bench and Tommy figure next week, which would be placed in either the Oakhurst or Taw Hill areas of the parish.

The Tommies were created for the 2018 Armistice project There But Not There run by armed-forces charity Remembered who raise money to help with care for those suffering from the hidden wounds of war.
