A BOY racer meet in west Swindon has prompted a probe by police.
Witnesses say around 30 cars met near Pets at Home, Mannington, on Saturday night.

The racers in souped-up hatchback cars were then seen racing along Great Western Way.

One woman, 52, from Rushey Platt, was shocked when a racer passed her at high speed between the Mannington and Bridgemead roundabouts.

She said: “One of them clipped the back of my car. The police asked me if I could see any numberplate, but at 100 miles per hour I didn’t see it.”

The businesswoman said she had noticed the problem getting worse over recent weeks. She regularly drives along the fast stretch of road at night, picking her daughter up from a part-time job at the Bridgemead McDonald’s restaurant.

She said of the boy racer meets along Great Western Way: “It’s becoming a thing now. It’s definitely worse at the weekends. Outside Pets at Home last week was the worst it’s been. There were about 30 cars. I’m not bothered about that, but it’s the fact they were racing.”

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said: “We received reports of this incident and we are making enquiries.”

The force confirmed it was yet to make any arrests.

Neighbourhoods across Swindon have suffered from late night drivers over the years.

In 2016, Sgt Max Whyte of Swindon’s town centre policing team, said his officers were stepping up patrols following complaints of loud cars driving up Victoria Road.

A year earlier, former Labour Party MP candidate Anna Snelgrove called for barriers to be installed in the Regent Circus car park to prevent yobs screaming into the car park.”
