A MOREDON mum was outraged when she received a message from her son’s school on Thursday saying he’d been placed in isolation because of his ear piercing.

Sarah Yates claimed that her 12-year-old son Tyler Ellis has worn the ear piercing – a gold stud with a small diamond clip – since he started at Nova Hreod Academy in September and she was baffled as to why it had become an issue many months later.

She said: “Suddenly, the school are saying that if he doesn’t take the piercing out, he will stay in isolation, and that only entirely-gold studs are ok for ear piercings.

“He has uniform inspections every day and no one said anything, there are girls with too much makeup on and different coloured hair or skirts that are too short and nothing’s done, but now they’ve decided to punish him for this tiny diamond, it’s ridiculous.

“I just wish they’d told me about this first and dealt with this in the right way rather than shove him in isolation.

“The headteacher has gold studs with diamonds in, it’s hypocrisy.

“He’s had his ear pierced since he was a one-year-old and it’s not affected his work or anyone else’s, but being stuck in isolation will disturb his education.”

The school disagreed that Tyler had worn the earring all year and defended its actions.

A spokesperson for Nova Hreod Academy said: “As far as we are concerned, this is a recent event and action was taken as soon as it came to our attention.

“Like any good school, we have a clear and consistent uniform policy which parents and pupils are fully aware of and which is appreciated and followed by the overwhelming majority of students.

“Very rarely, a student refuses to follow the policy and, if this continues, we reluctantly take action until the issue is resolved and they follow the rules like everyone else.

“They remain in school but are taught separately; receiving a full education with their learning unaffected.”
