ROCK and roll hits got toes tapping, as an Old Town care home celebrated a clean bill of health from watchdog inspectors.

Singing group the Polka Dot Peaches powered through a catalogue of old favourites, while delighted residents at Kingsmead Care Home looked on.

Staff celebrated the Prospect Place home’s latest Care Quality Commission (CQC) report – with watchdog inspectors rating it Good.

Nicky Bickerstaff, care home manager, said: “I’ve got a really committed team, hard-working and committed. We’ve always been good.”

But she said staff absence had seen a slight slip in performance – with the CQC handing the home a Requires Improvement rating when it was last inspected in February 2017.

“We’ve turned it round and brought it up,” said Nicky. “It’s an achievement to get rated Good.”

In their latest report, the CQC said that improvements had been implemented since the last inspection. Inspectors said of the home: “The team worked well together, staff praised the management and told us they were led by example. The staff were enthusiastic and there was a positive, cheerful atmosphere at the service.”

Nicky said that a number of the home’s residents had dementia, requiring more specialist care: “All of the staff in the home – our maintenance staff, kitchen staff, nurses – have all had training on dementia awareness.”

And the close-harmony music was hand-picked for the huge variety of ages and tastes in the home: “We have a 106-year-old resident and very young staff. We’ve got something for every type.”
