A MEMORIAL day to remember the dead and fight like Hell for the living will be held in Swindon says a general workers’ union.

The GMB Southern group will commemorate International Workers Memorial Day at a number of events in Wiltshire.

Paul Maloney, GMB Regional Secretary said: “This year, the theme of International Workers’ Memorial Day is unionised workplaces are safer workplaces.

"At GMB we always have and always will fight for the safety for all workers whoever they are.

“We must also use this day to acknowledge the families of those who have lost their lives through the effects of work, as well as their friends, workmates and their communities who are still suffering these unbearable tragedies.

Workers killed or injured at work will be remembered on April 28 as members step up efforts to prevent others from being killed or injured in the future.

The day is commemorated throughout the world and is officially recognised by the UK Government.

A wreath laying will take place at the Mesothelioma Memorial Garden in Queens Park at 1.00 pm on Saturday.

The Trades Union Congress says: “More people are killed at work than in wars.

"Most don’t die of mystery ailments. They die because an employer decided their safety just wasn’t a priority.”
