Eight weeks in jail for alcohol thief

COURT: A drug addict has been sent to prison for eight weeks, after admitting to stealing alcohol.

Gemma Louise O’Malley, 32, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to stealing a £25 bottle of Jack Daniels and destroying two bottles of wine from Tesco.

She was sentenced to four weeks in prison for each offence, with magistrates taking a firmer line because they believe O’Malley was stealing to fund a drug habit.

She was also told to pay compensation of £11 and a victim surcharge of £104.

Co-op assault

COURT: A Taw Hill man has been given a community order for a Co-op assault.

Joshua James Bird, 21, pleaded not guilty to assaulting two people at the Taw Hill food store last May. But Swindon magistrates found him guilty when he appeared before the court in March.

He was ordered to pay £620 in court costs, a victim surcharge of £85 and given a community order requiring him to spend 21 hours at an attendance centre.

Bird, of Dydale Road, admitted another offence of failing to surrender to Chippenham Magistrates' Court on February 14.
