Sarah Singleton looks at what's on offer in Swindon's theatres this week.

  • The Kentwood Choir presents its Showcase 2018 at the Wyvern Theatre on Saturday at 7.30pm.

Kentwood’s annual extravaganza will feature wonderful choral singing, brilliant soloists and the Little Big Band under the direction of top West End musical director Paul Maguire. Their charity this year is Hearing Dogs. Tickets are £17.

  • Swindon’s only all-female big band Swing Birds make their fourth annual outing on Sunday. This year, due to popular demand, Swing Birds have migrated to the Wyvern Theatre to accommodate a larger audience. Enjoy live swing music inspired by the Ivy Benson Band, arguably the best all-female big band ever seen in the UK. The show starts at 7.30pm and tickets are £16, concessions available.

  • The multi-talented Brian Conley brings his new show Still The Greatest Entertainer (In His Price Range) to Swindon’s Wyvern Theatre on Tuesday.

The show mixes up new comedy, sketches and songs, as well as some of his best-known material from stage and screen. Tickets are £27.

  • Former songwriter and guitarist in post-Punk band The Slits, Viv Albertine will talk about her new book To Throw Away Unopened, at Swindon Arts Centre tonight. The book is described as a fearless dissection of one woman’s search for truths about family, power, intimacy, love and identity as a revel and outsider. Part of Swindon Festival of Literature, it starts at 8pm and tickets are £9.

  • The societal impact of robotics and artifical intelligence will be explored by writer and professor of robot ethics Alan Winfield.

The author of Robotics: a very short introduction, Alan Winfield will be discussing the future of robots in society and ethical perspectives on artificial intelligence, at Swindon Arts Centre on Friday at 8pm. Tickets are £8.

  • Poets of any age or experience are invited to share their verve and verse in the 22nd Swindon Slam! which will take place at Swindon Arts Centre on Saturday from 7.30pm.

Competing poets are called up on stage to perform for three minutes each - and from then on it’s a knock-out. If you want to compete, contact sjarbury@gmail.com. Tickets are £8.

  • Award-winning writers and illustrators Gareth P Jones and Steve May present The Greatest Story Never Told at Swindon Arts Centre on Saturday at 12 noon. Suitable for adults and children, as long as you like telling, writing or hearing stories. Tickets are £5.
