THE ELECTRICITY board worker caught up in a Swindon explosion remains in hospital.

The Health and Safety Executive has launched an investigation, following the incident at the Barnfield Road sewage works.

Scottish and Southern Electricity confirmed that their worker remained in hospital. The man was taken to Southmead Hospital on Thursday afternoon with burns.

The explosion and fire in a high voltage generator at the Thames Water site brought a huge emergency work response. A spokesman for South Western Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 2.20pm to an incident involving a reported explosion.

“We attended with various resources including three ambulances, two air ambulances and two hazardous area response teams.” Firefighters from Stratton, Westlea and Drove Road were called to the explosion.

A safety probe has been launched. A spokeswoman for the Health and Safety Executive said: “HSE is aware of the incident and is investigating.”

Responding, a spokesman for electricity board SSE said: “A full investigation is now underway and we will work closely with all parties, including Thames Water and HSE, throughout this process to establish what went wrong.”
