SWINDON slimmers handed over more than 1,300 bags of clothes to fund cancer research after losing a combined total of almost 5,000st.
Emptying drawers and wardrobes of garments that were too big, they managed to raise around £32,500 for the cause.
One of the organisers, Slimming World consultant Pete Day said: “This year we have absolutely smashed it. It has been a really good year.”
The donation was part of a national campaign encouraging members of the club to shed their over-sized clothes, shoes and accessories and help Cancer Research UK.
“I don’t think there is one person in the country that has not been affected in some way by cancer and I think it is on people’s minds more these days,” said Pete after the event. “It is really liberating for our members to be getting rid of the clothes they will never fit into again.”
Last year the campaign raised £3.3m. Local members collected 928 bags and generated £24,550, not only bringing in cash for the charity, but helping to highlight the links between obesity and cancer.
