A SWINDON College student has been crowned a Future Tech Superstar after being voted to win a top award.

Leon Johnson is studying a BTEC National Extended Diploma in Creative Digital Media Production at the college.

He won one of 12 awards at The Techies, which was sponsored by the Swindon and Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership.

Leon said: "It was a big shock to be nominated for and to win such a prestigious award.

"I am honoured to be given the opportunity to turn something that I considered a hobby into an ambition for a career”.

"This all started as a hobby that I did in my spare time in my bedroom at home."

Sue Rees, Head of Learning for Swindon College's Art and Design department said: "We are thrilled that Leon has won this award, he is extremely talented and his tutor Paul Moss spotted early on that he had potential to really develop his already great skills that he came to the course with."

Leon has worked with Rendermedia Ltd, who he approached when he was looking for a part-time work placement as part of his course.

The managing director was impressed with his portfolio and offered Leon a placement.

Managing director Mark Miles said: “We are always interested in discovering new talent.

"Leon’s work demonstrates both natural talent and an understanding of what we’re aiming to achieve, and it is clear that he will be a great help to us as the company grows.

"We are also pleased to support Leon through his college course and as he sets out on his own career.”

Leon makes 3D virtual reality simulations.

The audience voted at the Techies ceremony for who they wanted to win the Future Tech Superstar award, and Leon received the most votes.

After completing his course, Leon will work full-time at Render Media.
