THIS is the amazing moment Swindon Oscar winner Maisie Sly learns she will meet the Queen.

The deaf youngster starred in The Silent Child, a short film that follows profoundly deaf child Libby born to a hearing family who struggle to communicate with their girl.

In March, the film claimed the Best Live Action Short Film at the 90th Academy Awards.

And now Maisie, six, will meet the monarch.

In a video posted on The Silent Child’s Twitter profile Maisie is told: “I’ve got something to tell you. Someone really famous wants to meet you. Can you guess who it is?”

She replies: “Don’t know.”

“The Queen,” she’s told. “You’re going to give her some flowers.”

Maisie laughs and smiles after hearing the news.

A hundred children auditioned for a part in The Silent Child. Maisie, who attends Red Oaks Primary School, claimed the lead role.

She plays Libby, who grows up isolated and develops behavioural problems until a social worker steps in. Libby’s saviour is played by Rachel Shenton, most famous as Hollyoaks’ Mitzee Minniver. She wrote the film to raise awareness of issues around deafness. Rachel’s father became deaf when she was just 12-years-old.

The Silent Child has been shown on primetime BBC TV. In February the film was also screened at Swindon’s Arts Centre.

At that screening Maisie’s dad Gilson said: “It’s a great pleasure to be able to finally show this in Swindon.

“It’s a film to be appreciated and to spread its message - let people know what you’ve seen and the emotions you’ve felt.”
