A CAMPAIGN to give a boy his smile back is calling for donations to fund life-changing therapies.

Oliver was just three when he suffered a massive seizure at home in 2016 and was rushed to John Radcliff Hospital.

Doctors put him in a coma for five days and diagnosed him with acute necrotising encephalitis of childhood (ANEC), a rare type of inflammation in the brain, leaving Oliver with severe brain damage.

Dad Michael Johnson, from Didcot, Oxfordshire, said: “It was devastating, the world as we knew it was falling down around us.

“He’s visually impaired, he can’t walk, talk or feed himself, he’s on seven different kinds of medication and he has trouble gripping things.

Oliver’s mum Suzanna Johnson said: “He had a lovely character but now it’s like we’ve lost a child and we’re bringing up a different child who looks exactly like him that we still love."

Now a campaign is underway to give Oliver a chance of recovery with hydrotherapy sessions, which aren’t available on the NHS, and give his parents their son's smile back since the seizure 14 months ago.

Close family-friend Samuel May started Bring Back Oliver's Smile on Facebook and has already raised more than £1600 so far through a charity auction and plans to do a 25k walk in June.

“Any little improvement is worth the money, we just want to do what we can to give him the best start in life," said Samuel.

"He’s just a lovely little boy and he’s so important in my life so anything I can do through the fundraising I’ve been doing.”
