FIVE football hooligans banned from attending matches have failed to hand in their passports.

Ahead of the World Cup, Wiltshire Police seized the passports from nine fans with football banning orders.

But a further five fans subject to the match bans, a court order designed to stop known football hooligan from causing trouble at matches in the UK or abroad, did not surrender their passports.

The Advertiser understands that not all those five will have passports, but that police are investigating several.

Ahead of the World Cup, Wiltshire Police issued stern advice to those determined to cause trouble.

Inspector Martyn Sweett, who oversees the force’s preparations for tournament related policing, said: “We want everyone to enjoy the World Cup, but to also be mindful of their behaviour and to act responsibly.

“The vast majority of people are intent on enjoying the tournament, but with emotions running high and alcohol being consumed, it can lead to other issues such as drink-related disorder, hate crime, or drink-driving.

“We are always prepared for events like the World Cup and have a plan in place, which may involve additional staff being deployed at certain times during the tournament when necessary.”

England’s World Cup campaign begins this evening. They take on Tunisia in their Group G match, kicking off at 7pm.
