HAVING only been to three concerts in my lifetime, and all three of them were to see the god that is Bruce Springsteen, it was going to be a tough ask for George Ezra to match The Boss.

But at the idyllic Westonbirt Arboretum on Sunday night, young George gave it a real good go.

There is no denying that the star has a fantastic and, arguably, unique voice, one that cut through the night with remarkable ease.

I must profess that I was not a huge fan of the 25-year-old’s music beforehand, although my dear mother has criticised me for not liking enough music that is more recent than the 1980’s, but seeing him live turned me into a fan.

His youthful and ebullient manner was tremendously well received by the 7,000-strong crowd, who were treated to his top tunes from his two albums: Wanted on Voyage and Staying at Tamara’s.

Songs that the crowd went particularly wild for were Cassy O, Paradise, Shotgun, Pretty Shining People and, of course, in the encore, Budapest.

A couple of takeaways that I found rather titillating. One, young George changes guitars more than I watch youtube videos of Roger Federer.

And two, he does love a good brief on what the upcoming song is about, which, with his good sense of humour, gave the masses a few unexpected laughs too.

Before his soulful voice boomed out to the audience, who were either standing up or sitting in camping chairs with enough tasty tuck to last them through to the morning, he was ably supported by 'These Days' singer, Dan Caplen.

To have these two incredibly talented singers on one night, which was part of the Forestry Commission’s Forest Live concert series, was a real treat.

The stewards were very helpful and our exit from the site was swift and painless.

In terms of food, drink and toilets, I thought this in plentiful supply and well organised.

The only thing that could have been better was my ability to actually dress sensibly. Wearing my favourite brown, smart shoes was a rookie error.

But if George comes back to the venue, I will be calling shotgun for that one.
