THE boss for BMW UK has added to calls on the government to urgently give clarity over Brexit.

The motor giant produces MINI parts at the plant in Stratton St Margaret and supplies over a million parts every week for the BMW group’s plants in Oxford and Hams Hall in Warwickshire.

Nearly 5,000 people are employed across the three plants.

BMW UK boss Ian Roberson warned the car making industry is facing tough decisions without clarity on Brexit, saying “If we don’t get clarity in the next couple of months we have to start making those contingency plans... which means making the UK less competitive than it is in a very competitive world right now,” he said.

“That is a decisive issue that ultimately could damage this industry.”

The company previously warned of the ‘nightmare’ scenario of delays at customs caused by a no-deal Brexit in March and said it has been building up bigger stocks of supplies to cope with any future disruption.

Honda has also issued warnings to MPs about the disruption Brexit could cause to production and said it has drawn up stockpile plans at its plant in South Marston to safeguard its delivery chain.
