A SWINDON man was fined after letting off a firework after Wednesday night’s World Cup semi-final.
The 25-year-old was arrested outside the Woodlands Edge pub, Peatmoor, for discharging a firework on a public street. He was given a fixed penalty notice, Wiltshire Police said.
Officers had been called to reports of a fight, which a force spokeswoman said had largely dispersed by the time their officers arrived at the pub.
One man, David, 25, who did not want to give his surname, watched England’s semi-final cup clash against Croatia on TV screens at the Woodlands Edge. He said of the problems after the game: “It was pretty manic. It was after the game; if England had won everyone would have been hugging.
“The trouble started as a bit of a scuffle and they took it outside as the game finished. There was a lot of hanging about, people climbing on top of a car.
“It was an absolute mess. It was embarrassing really. Drink mixed with the disappointment didn’t help.”
